What is Stewardship?

 

Stewardship is a Catholic Christian way of life based on the spiritual principles of the Old Testament and the teachings of Jesus in the Gospels. When lovingly embraced, Christian stewardship produces a spirituality that glorifies our Heavenly Father, deepens our relationship with Jesus Christ, and refreshes our lives with the Holy Spirit. 

 

Stewardship is an expression of gratitude to God. It reminds us that we are the administrators, NOT the owners, of our assets. It fills a need deep within each of us to worship God, and to thank Him for the abundant blessings He has showered upon us.

 

Stewardship is based on the fact that all we have and are comes from God. We commit ourselves to stewardship as a way of thanking God for all his blessings, returning to him a portion of our time, talent, and treasure.

 

Although we have different amounts of time to live on this earth, we are called by God to use our time to the best of our abilities.  Good stewardship of time means we will share some time each day with God in prayer, praise and thanksgiving, and some time caring for the needs of others.

 

Every person has a flair for something.  Even the ability to smile is a talent. When you smile, the inner essence of your soul is visible to others. That ability to smile through whatever comes your way will help others learn to cope with the trials in their lives. Good stewardship of talent means we identify our talents, and use them to glorify God and to help other people.

 

Using one’s treasure for the benefit of others is the good steward’s way of reaching out. For example, welcoming of strangers into one’s home or parish, and visiting the sick or infirm and making sure their needs are taken care of, are ways the stewardship of treasure draws us closer to God. Good stewardship of treasure also means we intentionally plan donations to the church and to other charities.

Jesus Christ is God’s greatest gift to us. Christian stewardship leads us to share a portion of our time, talent, and treasure so that the Good News of Jesus Christ may be shared with those who do not know Him. Striving to be a good steward and a good disciple is our response to the stewardship of time, talent and treasure.
